Athens Trip
Sophia
visits her home island of Karpathos every summer!
She'll be leaving Philadelphia for Athens on June 22, and leaving
Athens to return to Philadelphia on August 20. She's staying longer
this year to celebrate her niece Irene Lentis's big fat Greek wedding
to Michael Tavernaris. She also leads
tours when there is enough interest. If you're interested in coming
along, let us know by February of the year you wish to come along, and
contact us at (570) 326-4493 or by email at sdaskalakis@comcast.net.
Calling by February gets you
the best rates. We're also working on building a
workshop and retreat center there!
The Olive Tree Retreat
Sophia is working on creating a retreat on Karpathos
that will be a holistic destination aimed at rejuvenating the mind,
body & soul. It will have on-site seasonal
workshops including: landscape painting, yoga, tai-chi,
pottery, culinary courses in traditional cuisine, and more. Check
the retreat website often for updates!
Here are some photos of the construction
at the retreat site; we will update them regularly as construction
progresses.
Cooking Classes
Starting in January, we'll be giving cooking classes! Click on the link for the
details.

About the Restaurant
The Olive Tree is a small restaurant owned by Sophia Daskalakis. Sophia
was born
in the USA but was raised on Karpathos, one of the islands in the Greek
Dodecanese chain that retains its traditional culture. When Sophia
returned to the US she decided to use her knowledge of authentic Greek
and Karpathian cooking to open a restaurant that provided a culinary
experience that you couldn't previously find anywhere but the Aegean.
Because The Olive Tree isn't a chain, Sophia is able to
devise and quickly add many delicious dishes to her long menu. As the
restaurant's success grew, she branched into other Mediterranean
cuisines, vegetarian dishes, and low-sodium/low-cholesterol versions of
her standard recipes. The Olive Tree received an award
in January 2001 from a regional culture magazine recognizing it as the
best restaurant in its area.
Sophia prides herself on making everything on the
premises. If you order a gyro, you can be sure the tzatziki was made in
the kitchen from fresh garlic, not bought in bulk from a wholesaler.
And of course all the pastries, from the baklavas to the
galaktombourekos, are made by Sophia's own hands.
Authentic Pastries, Baklava and
Cheesecakes
It's these pastries that are the reason for putting this
web site together.
They make wonderful gifts, especially when presented in one of our
metallic
gold decorative tins. You can select from the wide variety of baklavas
or chocolate logs listed on our pastry
selections
page. Just pick the variety you'd like and decide how many you
want.
Because the size of the pastries varies depending on the type, we can't
give an exact amount that will fit in each tin. When you place an order
we'll go over all the details and pick the size tin that best suits
your
needs. After all, the personal touch is why you're not getting a box of
candies from the grocery store, isn't it?
How to Order
We don't take orders over the World Wide Web, because we
want to talk to each of our customers and make sure that we're meeting
all their needs and expectations. So when you're ready to order just
give us a call at (570) 326-4493, email us at: sdaskalakis@comcast.net or
stop
in and tell us what you'd like.
Or for our specialty baklava
and cheesecakes you could print out our order
form and send it to the above address along with your payment.
To ensure the freshness of our products, we don't ship outside North
America. If you are a Pennsylvania resident, we'll have to charge the
6% sales tax.
The cost of the decorative tins varies depending on the
size of tin selected; the cost of shipping varies depending on the
weight of the package and the distance shipped. Please allow at least a
week for production and delivery. We are open to special orders for
varieties of pastries that aren't listed here; these will have to be
worked out through consultation between you and Sophia.
